In "Colibrí," Espada creates an extended metaphor by comparing the Taino to the hummingbird. The tenor, who is the subject of the comparison is the hummingbird; the vehicle, or metaphorical term itself, is the Taino. The third stanza serves as an example of an implicit metaphor, in which, the tenor is implied rather than specified. The implied tenor is the Taino.
