There is a definite "fish out of water tone" to the narrative. Flora Poste is the Fish Out of Water as a young, sophisticated urbanite in a rural country setting. As such themes often go, there is considerable friction and adjustment to the new life and, by the end, an appreciation for it. Flora goes wittingly to Cold Comfort Farm, which is anything but comfortable and tidy, the way she likes things to be.
