Romain Rolland was a French writer and recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. He was one of Freud's contemporaries, as well as the distinguished friend to whom Freud refers in Chapter I, where Rolland offers his opinion of Freud's earlier book on religion. Freud uses Rolland's remark as a departure point for the discussion of the love instinct.
