Who is Mauro Carias from City of the Beasts and what is their importance?

Mauro Carias is an entrepreneur who appears to be supporting the International Geographic crew on their quest to search for the Beast. In reality, Carias is planning to have Dr. Torres inoculate all the natives with a deadly form of the measles virus so that they will die, leaving the way clear for Carias to mine the region for its wealth of natural resources. Carias is killed during a fight after Alex and Nadia figure out the plan.
