What do eggs represent?

Colonel Grechko wants five eggs to make a cake for his daughter's birthday. In a city that is starving, eggs are nearly impossible to find. Kolya and Lev must find them if their lives are to be spared. The eggs come to represent life for these two as well as the plight of the starving townspeople.
