One major theme in the novel is secrets. Burnett is a good man who only wants to protect the students at Shadow Falls. To do this, however, Burnett needs to know everything that is going on around him. For this reason, Burnett does not appreciate secrets. As this novel unfolds, Burnett learns some of the truth behind actions that took place in previous novels, such as the fact that Hayden Yates is a chameleon who has been working secretly to help Kylie’s grandfather watch over her.

Burnett is not the only one who dislikes secrets. Kylie, too, dislikes them. For this reason, she has cut herself off from the one boy she truly loves because of the secrets he kept from her. Kylie also suspects that her mother’s boyfriend John is hiding secrets. It is soon revealed that those secrets are big enough to destroy Kylie’s entire family.

Other themes in the nove, Chosen at Nightfall, include betrayal and love.
