What is the author's tone in Children of the Mind by Orson Scott Card?

The novel primarily consists of narration, but dialog comprises a significant portion as well and brief bits of exposition are used as well in order to explicate some of the more scientific aspects of the story. The tone Card uses to narrate is relaxed without being informal.
