Who is Greer from Child of God and what is their importance?

Greer is a farmer, whose farm is located near the cave where Lester is hiding out. Lester regularly sneaks down to the farm and steals food. He even attempts to murder Greer, and although, he succeeds in shooting him.... Greer successfully grabs his gum and shoots Lester in the arm.
