What circumstances led to marguerites becoming a bound-out girl to the sargent family?

Marguerite, who was supposed to be traveling to Quebec with her family, lost all of her family members except her grandmother on the journey. Once in North America, Marguerite's grandmother died as well. Left alone in the world, Maggie is "bound-out", meaning she has contracted to work for a family in exchange for her room and board.
