Competition is a recurring idea. In general, there is competition in the war itself. There are opposing forces that are trying to take over the different planets and territories in space. Specifically, however, there is competition between two of the main characters in the novel, which is Kovacs and Schneider. Even though Schneider comes to Kovacs for help to excavate the Martian spaceship, the two compete primarily for the attention of Tanya Wardani.
