What metaphors are used in The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton?

In Chapter Four, the Reverend metaphorically speaks of Christ's second coming and the way he will change the world. Ruth, however, doesn't understand the metaphor and is disappointed when Jesus does not appear.
