Who is Sterling Williams from Black Like Me and what is their importance?

Griffin meets Sterling Williams, a shoeshine, in New Orleans. Griffin believes that Sterling might be helpful in advising him during his project, so he later returns to New Orleans as a black man and confides in Sterling about his plans. Sterling assists Griffin with his speech and gives him other advice that will ease his assimilation into New Orleans' black society.
