Another primary theme of the novel is the effect of experience on all behaviors. Throughout the novel, the characters' experiences influence their behaviors even though they may not be aware of the link. Nafina, Peter's grandmother, spends much of her life in silence about her experiences. However, during World War II, her inner fears come bursting forward through her breakdown, making it very clear that her horrifying experience through the genocide has left a lasting impact on her life.
