In Chapter Two, we learn that Aunt Maggie’s husband, Uncle Hoskins owns a successful saloon. One night he does not come home. After two days they learn he has been killed by whites who are jealous of his success. These same whites are threatening to kill the whole family, and they must pack up quickly and flee to save their lives. There is no funeral, no flowers; they do not even know where Uncle Hoskins is buried.
