It is clear that Mama does not think that separating the family for any reason is a good idea. She would seem to believe that it is especially a bad idea for David to leave to work because he needs to be around home more to be a good role model for his sons. Knowing this, then, it is no wonder that her reaction is what it is when Papa tells her that he is leaving again.
