The protagonist in Beowulf is Beowulf, he is the seventh son of the seventh son in the lineage of Scyld so he wasn't anywhere close to being the king in his home land so he had to make a name for himself. Hearing of the monster Grendel terrorizing the Daines he set out to kill the beast.
