Who is Grendel from Beowulf and what is their importance?

Grendel from Beowulf is a direct descendent of Cain, from the bible and the first murderer, he is a cannibal with a hatred for all things light and joyful. This hate prompted his attack on the meade hall and lead to Beowulfs arrival.
