There are numerous metaphors given in this novel. Some of them include mother's milk, the color red, the supernatural. One of the largest metaphors has to do with the use of 'trees'. When Paul D comes to Sethe's house, she tells him she ahs a tree on her back. Later we learn that this is a pattern that was caused from a whipping that she received. Paul D is horrified to find that the'tree' is scars and the real metaphor is that trees are alive and vibrant and at this point in Sethe's life, she has very little in her life that is alive or vibrant.
