Gypsy takes out her anger over her father's suicide on Porter because he is her step-father. Porter never resents her feelings, and he always treats Gypsy with love and respect. Over the course of the novel, Gypsy comes to accept her father's suicide, and as a result, she also comes to see Porter as a loving, positive figure in her life.
