In the story, Mother and Daughter, Yollie wears a dress that has been dyed black. When she gets caught in the rain, the dye to runs. As the dye runs out of her clothing, Yollie cries and runs home.... completely mortified. As a result, the dress becomes a metaphor for Yollie and a symbol of her inability to obtain clothing that marks a certain social status.
