One major theme in Bartleby the Scrivener is that of isolation. In the story, we see Bartleby's difficulties and challenges in terms of making a connection with other. He is isolated at work by walls and screens, he isolates himself socially, and he even gives up leaving his workplace. Note, Bartleby's isolation is also self-imposed. He doesn't reach out, and he doesn't accept an offered hand.
