Why did Josef Matt always wear his red t-shirt while climbing?

Teo told Matt that his father always wore a red shirt because he knew that someday he would reach the summit of the Citadel. Once there, he planned to fly the t-shirt from a pole, so that everyone could see the color in the sky.
