Muhammad Yanus is the main character and subject of the autobiography. He is raised in the city of Chittagong. Well educated and intelligent, Muhammad is offered a Fulbright scholarship in the states, where he completes his graduate studies. After the war in Bangladesh, he returns home and establishes the Grameen Bank, which is formed in order to help those in poverty.
