Sapphira was a part of the first century church, and Higgs suggests that she may even have been a leader in the church. When she and her husband saw the praise and respect received by those who donated money to the church from a land sale, they decided to do the same. They only gave a portion of the sale, however, telling everyone that it was the full amount. Peter confronted the couple one at a time and they continued to lie. Both Sapphira and her husband died suddenly after lying to Peter.

Higgs argues that Sapphira took her eyes off God, focusing on her own greed and selfishness. In many ways, she is a Good Girl. She was a part of the early church and a follower of Jesus. She tried to give, however, for all of the wrong reasons. Instead of giving to God, she gave to get recognition and praise. Although the Bible doesn't say what Sapphira died of, the circumstances suggest that both Sapphira and her husband died because of their lies.
