Describe symbolism in Average Waves in Unprotected Waters by Anne Tyler

The main symbol in the story is that of "average waves", or the difficulties we all face in life. Average waves are first mentioned in regard to Bet's childhood, and the way her father gaged their actions at the shore.... in the end, those waves have become the problems Bet must deal with day to day.
