Who is Dr. A. DeWitt Tubbs from Arrowsmith?

The McGurk Institute is located in New York City, and Dr. DeWitt is the institutes's director. Initially, DeWitt is very supportive of Martin's research, but over time, he is disenchanted with Martin because of his refusal to participate in activities that would promote the institute's status.
