Ismene is Antigone's sister. When Antigone refuses to accept Creon's decree that Polynices remain unburied, Ismene refuses to help her. Thus, we see the difference between the sisters. Where Antigone rebels against male authority, Ismene, like most women of the period, defers to what she has been told to do. Ismene is beautiful, complacent, and cautious.
