Like hunger, death and illness is a constant in Frank’s young life, beginning with the death of his infant sister Margaret, and his twin brothers, Eugene and Oliver. As Frank grows older, he becomes so accustomed to the deaths of friends and relatives that his reactions almost seem callous.
