Vera Claythorne is an attractive young woman who comes to Indian Island expecting employment as a secretary after receiving a letter from Mrs. Owen. Lombard describes her as "a cool customer ... one who could hold her own in love or war," an ironic foreshadowing of her composure as she fatally shoots him.
