A metaphor for James' life as a seminarian, poet, radical priest and author is
provided by Patrick Hughes, who says that James consistently leaves cracking ice behind him, but as long as he keeps skating, he doesn't fall in. In other words, James creates and skates on his own thin ice as a sometime priest and author.
