What is the author's tone in An American Requiem by James P. Carroll?

The author's tone is sympathetic and understanding of his own action and thoughts and as much as possible to those of his father. James never considers his father anything but a man of good will, who believes in achieving the task at hand. James tries to illustrate why and how he and Joseph differed in opinion.
