One major theme in the novel, Among the Volcanoes, is the fusion of past and present. In the novel, we see Isabel's village rejoice at the installation of running water. None-the-less, we also see that a lack of modern conveniences is also one of the reasons her village's culture and traditions live on through its people. This is also evident in the practice of religion and medicine, as paganism exists alongside Catholocism and hospitals are becoming an alternative choice to natural remedies.
