Civil disobedience is one the novel's main themes. Rebellion and violence are often reactions to the loss of rights and democracy. In the novel, we see that rebellion is not always the answer..... but that in order to insure the benefits of freedom within a democracy it is also important to practice civil responsibility. Freedom of thought, individualism, and standing up for what is right are integral in protecting the freedoms we enjoy. Propaganda cannot sway and educated, intelligent populace.
