What metaphors are used in American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis?

Over the course of the novel, Patrick’s mental state deteriorates to the point where nothing seems logical anymore. His mental deterioration, thus, can be seen as a metaphor for the deterioration and loss of values that are taking place in society.
