Music is recurring idea in this novel because it is important enough to Bateman that he makes several side trips into the discussion of music during the writing of his story. Bateman discusses in detail Genesis, Whitney Houston, and Huey Lewis and the News in this novel, giving the reader insight into what Bateman believes is the best thing about these groups/singers, and what is the worst. Bateman also uses these forays into musical discussion as a way to reground himself when things become difficult.
