Nathan "Skip" Zuckerman from American Pastoral is a former classmate of Swede's. At the beginning of the story, at the high school reunion, it is Jerry who tells Nathan that Swede has died. Nathan practically worshipped Swede during highschool and realizes that there is a larger story waiting to be told. Since he is a writer by vocation, he determines to get the entire story.
