The language of the novel is precise English. Scarpetta, the narrator, is a well educated woman, holding both a degree in medicine and a degree in law. Therefore, the language that Scarpetta uses in her narration is clearly educated, with very little slang. The language also contains scientific words associated with Scarpetta's work as a forensic scientist, peppering the novel with large words and short explanations to their meaning.
