Death is an obvious idea to this novel because of Scarpetta's career. Scarpetta has made her life exploring death and finding reasons for its existence. Due to this career choice, Scarpetta is on the scene when the bodies of Deborah Harvey and Fred Cheney are found. Scarpetta spends the bulk of the novel attempting to find their killer, and working to bring justice and understanding to these deaths. Scarpetta is successful, but death continues to take victims when the suspect and Scarpetta's friend, Abby, are killed in the process.
