All Quiet on the Western Front

Major Symbol in Chapter 6

I'm in chapter 6 of this book and I was assigned to find one major symbol. I debating in choosing the front or the coffins and I need help analyzing the symbol and its themes. The themes that can be included are life in death, dehumanization, and industrialization.

In terms of Chapter Six, I believe that I would choose the machine guns as a symbol of savagery. One of the huge differences between this war, as compared to historic battles is the blood lust.... the need to survive at all costs, the need to kill all those in your path in order to stay alive. In the past, the goal was victory. Machine guns and bombings left armies fighting for inches, and the death toll was higher any ever seen.
