Himelstoss is at first a merciless, power hungry, tyrant. He wants the men to do whatever he says without question. He expects them to become ready to go into a battle situation. Ironically enough, Himmelstoss ends up being sent to the front, himself, where he proves himself to be nothing short of a coward. Later, he has an epiphany and asks forgiveness from the men. He later becomes a camp cook.
