Miss Margaret Prior from Affinity is the main character in the novel. She is the youngest daughter of a very wealthy Victorian family. She has had an affair with another woman who was working in their home, but was devastated when this same woman ended up seducing and marrying her Margaret's brother, Stephen. She goes to the women's prison to visit with the incarcerated in an attempt to forget her problems. This is where she meets Selina.
