As a child, Hackworth struggled with belonging...... he was shuffled in an out of foster homes until he turned fifteen, at which time, he lied about his age and joined the Army. After serving in Korea, Hackworth once again was left feeling like a fish out of water. His lack of education kept him out of the Army and attending college left him without the structure he needed in his daily life.
