The idea that surprising redemption can come from destruction is one of the major themes in the novel “A Visit From the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan. Through the life experiences of his friends, and some people that he doesn’t even know, aged and fearful rocker Scotty Hausmann gets a chance to wow New Yorkers with his talent. The concert represents the rebirth of music in an America that has become jaded and faithless. The novel also gives a nod to the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center as it is in the Footprint of these destroyed buildings that Scotty’s miracle concert is set.
