The book is written in first person with a limited view, which is the only option available to the author for this type of story. It should be noted that the point of view, while limited does include some details that the author did not personally witness. In some cases, these are things he learned from other people, but there are also some details that are historical and it seems reasonable that Tang got those from second-hand accounts of the war and from news casts at the time.
