How does Gabriel Garcia Marquez use imagery in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings?

There is a lot of Catholic imagery here. Garcia Marquez juxtaposes the withered old man with iconic imagery of the Catholic Church. This leads the townspeople to reject the old man because he does not fit the illusion of white angels they see in their books.
