Brigance uses a colloquial tone and language to create an intimate setting.... a setting in which he appears humble, modest, and most importantly.... trustworthy. He later uses the most descriptive words he can find to describe the girl's rapists.... her murderers. His illustration of the crime vividly portrays the assailants as inhuman..... animals. Unfortunately, racism may win out over justice.... looking for pity in the jurors is a thankless task.
