What is the theme in A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini?

One main theme in the novel,A Thousand Splendid Suns, is that of the oppression of women. The novel exposes the patriarchal system that was already in place in Afghanistan before the Taliban took control, as well as the subsequent implementation of laws by the Taliban supporting that control and punishing infractions after they took over.
