The novel's main conflict is centered around Miriam and Laila's lack of freedom and choice.... the patriarchal oppression they each face in their marriage. The communist occupation of Afghanistan during the Soviet era, as well as the Islamist totalitarianism under the Taliban serve as a backdrop to the world the women live in.
