There are several themes that run through this story. One of the biggest themes is the problem of co-dependency and a loss of self identity. We definitely see this in Gene's dependency on Finny, and later on, Finny's dependence on Gene. To a lesser degree there is also a theme of 'enemy as self' as both Gene and Finny have their own inner demons that they battle.
