Leper and all of the other boys had threatened to join the army and fight in World War II. Leper is the only one that actually does it, but the reality of war as opposed to the fantasy of war is too much and he loses himself. This would seem to foreshadow what happens to Finny at the end, as well as the boys coming to terms with their lives outside of the school grounds.
